Why Cannot I Feel Anything When I Do Kegels?
Difficulty feeling the contraction is extremely common — especially postpartum or early in practice. Here is why it happens and what to do about it.
This is more common than you think
Not being able to feel a pelvic floor contraction does not mean you are doing it wrong or that nothing is happening. It is one of the most common beginner experiences, particularly in the postpartum period.
Why sensation is often reduced
Nerve recovery takes time. Birth — whether vaginal or via C-section — can temporarily disrupt nerve signals in the pelvic area. Sensation gradually returns over weeks to months in most people.
The muscles may be too relaxed to notice. Paradoxically, if your pelvic floor has very little tone, a gentle contraction can feel like nothing at all.
You may still be learning the mind-muscle connection. Locating a specific muscle group you cannot see or easily observe is genuinely a skill. It takes practice for most people.
Tissue swelling immediately postpartum. In the first days and weeks after birth, tissues are swollen and recovering, which can further dull sensation.
What to try
- The stop-the-flow test: When urinating, try to stop the flow mid-stream. This can sometimes help identify the right muscles. Do not do this regularly — it is just a learning tool, not a practice method. - Try lying down rather than sitting or standing - Use a mirror to observe whether there is any visible contraction in the perineal area - Be patient — sensation often returns gradually over weeks
If nothing is working after several weeks of correct practice, a pelvic floor physiotherapist has additional techniques and tools to help.
When to seek professional help
If you have tried for 8+ weeks with no sensation at all, it is worth seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist. They can assess whether there is a physical reason and guide you through techniques that may be more effective.
